Scintilla 0.2.0: the Synthex's own ROM, a new chorus, and cheaper attacks.

    • The ROM bank: the 40 PRESETS now carry the values decoded from the Synthex's EPROMs, measured against a recording of the real instrument. Many sounds change.
    • The chorus as the schematic has it: two bucket-brigade lines.
    • Better oscillators: band-limited hard sync, a phase-derived triangle, VoiceCore's resonance curve; an exponential release.
    • Take-off without its click.
    • Velocity and aftertouch from the FM-1's own keys, on a SETTINGS page (GLO twice); off until you turn them on.
    • Fast filter attacks about half as dear: eight voices struck again and again on the heaviest patches went from ~125 % of a core to ~70 %.
    • MIDI CC 7 is the volume; the DIN jack's UART latched as in Dinghy 0.4.

    The whole list: CHANGELOG.md.

Install: Install on my FM-1, the FM-1 Firmware Hub, or firmware/tools/fm1_install.py scintilla-0.2.0.fwsc. Hold OCT- while switching on for the USB rescue; the hub takes it back to the official firmware. It reports the identity FM-1_96300200. Built and signed on GitHub from this tag.

Free and open source (GPL-3.0-only). Not affiliated with or endorsed by Elka, Generalmusic, Behringer / Music Tribe or M-VAVE.

Scintilla 0.1.1: the 1981 Elka Synthex, reborn on the M-VAVE FM-1.

The same firmware as 0.1, with its own identity: it now reports FM-1_96300101 (0.1 reported FM-1_960, which SID-1 also uses). Release builds are FM-1_963 + the version from now on. The code is 0.1's, which was installed and played on a real FM-1: the two builds differ only in the identity and version strings.

The Synthex of synthex-web, ported to integer C and checked sample by sample against the original, as a firmware of its own for the FM-1.

    • the 80 factory sounds (PRESETS 10..49, MEMORIES 10..49), Paul Wiffen's Laser Harp "Ring mod." among them
    • two layers of 8 voices (single, split, double), poly / mono / unison, glide and portamento
    • chorus, and an algorithmic reverb (plate, room, hall, galactic)
    • KNOB1..4 edit the four parameters on screen; pages for OSC, MIX, FILTER, ENVs, LFOs, GLIDE, OUTPUT, REVERB, JOYSTICK
    • MIDI in over USB and the DIN jack: notes with velocity, pitch bend, CC1 / 74 / 91 / 93, program change

Install: scintilla-0.1.1.fwsc with the FM-1 Firmware Hub or firmware/tools/fm1_install.py scintilla-0.1.1.fwsc. Hold OCT- while switching on for the USB rescue; the hub takes it back to the official firmware. Scintilla reads no other firmware's projects or samples. Not there yet: the delay, and saving edited sounds.

The videos: scintilla-short.mp4 (1080x1920) and scintilla-square.mp4 (1080x1080), the firmware playing in fm1-emu, sound unedited.
