  1. v0.9.8NACHTFAHRT 0.9.8Latest1 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. A quick update for the FM-1's CPU in Ryokuu.

    New in 0.9.8

    • Rain and Hail (the Atmospheres) work their bands at half the sample rate, which is less for the FM-1 to calculate. Their drops sit at 150 Hz to 6 kHz, under the half rate's limit, so they should sound the same. On a computer the saving is small (about 5% in Ryokuu): please send the Setup page's CPU peak.
    • Their levels are matched to Wind again.

    Upgrading

Install over 0.9.7: your saved settings are kept. A Ryokuu you have saved keeps its settings; the sound changes only in the Rain and Hail Atmospheres.

This build was tested less than usual (the full test suite was not run for it).

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.8.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.8.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: 0.9.7 and earlier releases stay available; or the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

Installing other firmware is at your own risk.

Try it first in the emulator: the same code, with sound, in the browser. The manual has the rest.

    Credits

NACHTFAHRT is based on DUB-1 by sbegueria, itself based on AMB-1 by Charles Vestal; its granular cloud follows JIANT's; the platform is Felucca by Leo Kuroshita (Hügelton Instruments). The Atmospheres' noise follows Skiff's NOISE engine; Shimmer's pitch shifter follows Felucca's and Skiff's; the Choir's vowel table is Felucca's (after Hillenbrand); Pluck's string follows pluck.c in M-VAVE's fm1_open (MIT, Electrosmith and Emilie Gillet); the FM voices play demo recipes from fm1_open's app/presets.c (M-VAVE, GPL-3.0), their envelopes after MSFA, Google's DX7 model (Apache-2.0); Rain and Hail hear water as many small drops each in its own band, after McDermott and Simoncelli (Neuron, 2011). GPL-3.0. M-VAVE and FM-1 are trademarks of their owners; NACHTFAHRT is not affiliated with M-VAVE or Hügelton Instruments.

  2. v0.9.7NACHTFAHRT 0.9.71 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. A quick update to take Ryokuu's CPU down.

    New in 0.9.7

    • Ryokuu was reaching 80% on the FM-1, and the engine then stopped playing its rain. The Rain Atmosphere is cheaper: no wash under the drops, and 3 bands instead of 6 (it also sounds a little thinner; the sound was chosen by ear). The level is matched to Wind as before.
    • Ryokuu's Lead is louder (level 60, was 54: too quiet for the speaker) and comes in sooner (after 2 bars, was 8).

    Upgrading

Install over 0.9.6: your saved settings are kept (nothing in the saved layout changed). A Ryokuu you have saved keeps its old settings: to hear the new one, hold GLO for 1.5 s on it (the piece back to its recipe).

This build was tested less than usual (the full test suite was not run for it). Please look at the Setup page's CPU peak in Ryokuu, and tell us.

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.7.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.7.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: 0.9.6 and earlier releases stay available; or the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

  3. v0.9.6NACHTFAHRT 0.9.61 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. This one adds a ninth piece and two new rains.

    New in 0.9.6

    • Ryokuu (緑雨, "green rain": the rain of early summer), a ninth piece: calm and ambient, after Jean-Michel Jarre. Strings walking the royal road (a chord every 8 bars), a theremin two octaves down gliding almost like a voice, low arps on 2600 and Sub, and rain outside. B♭ Dorian, 80 BPM.
    • Rain (an Atmosphere, after Drops and Hail): rain outside. Many small drops, each in its own band, over a wash.
    • Hail (an Atmosphere): deep, heavy thuds over a muffled rain.
    • The old Rain is renamed Drops; it keeps its sound and its place.

    Upgrading

Your saved pieces are reset to their recipes when you install: the ninth piece changes how they are stored. Anything you saved on a piece is lost; write down what you want to keep first.

The FM-1's CPU: Hail and Rain cost more than the other Atmospheres (on a computer about a third more in the heaviest pieces); not yet measured on the FM-1. The engine thins its sound for half a second above 75%. If you hear a piece thin out, the Setup page's CPU will show it; please tell us.

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.6.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.6.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: 0.9.5 and earlier releases stay available; or the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

  4. v0.9.5NACHTFAHRT 0.9.51 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. This one adds FM voices to the Sequences and the Lead.

    New in 0.9.5

    • FM voices on both Sequences (ALGORITHM, after Pluck): FM Keys, FM Bell, FM EP, FM Clav, FM Guitar, FMMarimba, FM Vibes, FM Metal, FM Bass, FM Sub. They play demo recipes from M-VAVE's fm1_open: three pairs of sines, each bending its partner's pitch, as a DX7 does. Decay is how long a note lasts and Cutoff how bright, as for the other voices.
    • FM voices on the Lead (ALGORITHM, after Synthi): FM Lead, FM Reed, FM Brass.
    • Their levels match the other voices on each layer.
    • No piece uses them yet: turn ALGORITHM on a layer's page to try them. A shake (a layer's button held) still picks only from the voices that were there before, and it can now pick the Drone's Choir too.

    Upgrading

Install over 0.9.4: your saved settings are kept (the FM voices are added at the end of each list, nothing moves).

The FM-1's CPU: an FM voice costs more than the other voices while its notes sound. On a computer, a Sequence on an FM voice costs about a sixth more in the heaviest pieces (Sunrain, Mirage); not yet measured on the FM-1. The engine thins its sound for half a second above 75%; with 0.9.4, Sunrain's start reached 79%. If you hear a piece thin out on an FM voice, the Setup page's CPU will show it; please tell us.

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.5.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.5.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: 0.9.4 and earlier releases stay available; or the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

  5. v0.9.4NACHTFAHRT 0.9.41 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. This one renews the Atmospheres and gives Phaedra its choir.

    New in 0.9.4

    • Wind gusts: pink noise in a band that drifts slowly, its level rising and falling with the band.
    • Surf is darker: brown noise, its top opening as each wave breaks and closing as it draws back. Both are gentler on the FM-1's bright speaker (5–10 dB less above 4 kHz) and as loud as before at the pieces' levels.
    • Rain, a new Atmosphere after Tape: soft drops over a quiet hush.
    • Phaedra: the Drone sings with the formant Choir, at level 70.

    Upgrading

Install over 0.9.3: your saved settings are kept (Rain is added at the end of the list, nothing moves). Because they're kept, a Phaedra you have saved keeps its old Drone: to hear the new Phaedra, hold GLO for 1.5 s on it (the piece back to its recipe).

The FM-1's CPU: on a computer the new Atmospheres cost the same as the old ones or less (Rain less than Space); not yet measured on the FM-1. The engine thins its sound for half a second above 75%; 0.9.1 peaked at 72%.

    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.4.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.4.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).

  6. v0.9.3NACHTFAHRT 0.9.31 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. This one adds sounds: a shimmering reverb on a black key, a plucked string for the sequences and a vowel choir for the Drone.

    New in 0.9.3

    • Shimmer (the fifth black key, where Swell was): hold it and the reverb's tail climbs an octave at a time into a glassy halo; let go and it fades with the reverb. Darkened for the FM-1's bright speaker, and bounded: it can't run away, even on the longest plate. It costs nothing while it isn't held.
    • Pluck, a new voice for Sequence and Sequence 2 (ALGORITHM on a sequence's sound page, the last choice): a plucked string (Karplus-Strong). Cutoff is how bright the pluck is, Decay how long it rings (in the highest octaves it rings short, as a real string does). Lighter on the CPU than the other sequence voices.
    • Choir, a new voice for the Drone (its last choice): a formant choir whose vowel follows Colour and the Drone's filter motion, from a dark "oo" to a bright "ee". Warm, and held to the other voices' level at any Resonance.
    • Horn: the Drone's old "Choir" (a saw through two fixed vowel filters), renamed for what it sounds like. Same sound, same place: pieces and saves that used it are unchanged.

    Upgrading

Install over 0.9.2: your saved settings are kept (the new voices are added at the end of their lists, so nothing moves).

The FM-1's CPU: the new voices were measured on a computer to cost no more than the ones they sit beside (Pluck less), and Shimmer about a point while held; none of it has been measured on the FM-1 yet. The engine thins its sound for half a second above 75%; 0.9.1 peaked at 72%.

    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.3.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.3.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).

  7. v0.9.2NACHTFAHRT 0.9.21 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0. This one is about the Lead: it now remembers, answers and develops, and it listens to you.

    New in 0.9.2

    • A Lead that remembers. It phrases in calls and answers, and the answer now comes a beat or two after the call (it used to wait two bars, which left the call hanging). It keeps its ideas for a while, plays them again with small variations, and brings its theme back in every Solo, every Bridge and at the Arc's peak. Towards the Arc's peak it plays more and higher, and settles afterwards.
    • Memory (GLO twice, the Arc page's fourth knob): how much the Lead keeps its ideas, from wandering (low) to a strong, returning theme (high). Each piece has its own: Timewind 55, Wahnfried 40, Phaedra 75, Rubycon 45, Stratosfear 85, Sunrain 60, Mirage 50, Cyborg 35.
    • Your melody becomes its theme. Play three or more notes on the white keys (up to 16, within four bars) and pause for two beats. The Lead answers you a beat later, in your rhythm with notes of its own, near where you stopped. Its next ideas grow out of your melody, straying further each time, until after about a minute and a half (sooner at low Memory, later at high) its ideas are its own again. Your melody itself comes back at the theme's moments, moved with the chords.
    • FORGET (PERFORM, the top key, G5, lit): the Lead forgets everything it remembers, your theme too, and starts fresh within a few bars.
    • Cyborg: the theremin Lead up front (level 70).
    • Fixed: a MIDI Start from a computer while NACHTFAHRT was already playing could leave the Lead holding one note through the whole intro; changing the scale or key in the middle of a Lead phrase played the rest of it in the old scale.
    • A new identity, FM-1_197000902 (was FM-1_8000901): NACHTFAHRT's own, shared with no other FM-1 firmware listed on The Firmware Hub.

    Upgrading

Your saved settings are reset. The Memory setting changes the save format, so after installing 0.9.2 every piece starts from its recipe again. If you tuned something on the FM-1 you want to keep, note it before installing.

The FM-1's CPU: 0.9.1 peaked at 72% (the engine thins its sound briefly above 75%). The new Lead plans at most one idea at a time, so it should add little, but this build hasn't been measured on the FM-1 yet: if you hear a piece thin out, the Setup page's CPU will show it; please tell us.

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.2.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.2.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: 0.9.1 and 0.9.0 stay available; or the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

  8. v0.9.1NACHTFAHRT 0.9.11 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Listen, and play.

A test version below 1.0, the second public build.

    New in 0.9.1

    • Filter, Wet and Energy move by themselves. With Motion up, PERFORM's three master actions drift on their own: the Filter sways slowly between Shut 30 and Open 30 (about 64 bars a round, opening first), Wet rises to about +50 and back (about 48 bars), and Energy follows the Arc's rise to about +50 at its peak. Motion sets how far they move; at Motion 0 nothing moves. Turn one by hand and your value holds until the next section; then the motion glides back from where you left it, over 8 bars. Lock holds all three.
    • A piece change returns Filter, Wet and Energy to 0, so a new piece starts as it was written.
    • SELECT on the Nachtfahrt (home) page turns Energy, shown and said, while the keys still play the Lead: no need to leave the keyboard for PERFORM.
    • The chord's ring: 32 dots round the chord's name grow clockwise from 12 o'clock as the chord plays, brighter in its last bar, so you can see when the chord will change and plan what you play. Red and still in Hold; none at Drift Hold. The chord and its orbits moved down to make room.
    • Quieter Atmospheres for the FM-1's bright speaker: Surf 5, Wind 7, Tape and Space 10 in the pieces.
    • Wahnfried retuned by ear: the strings at 95, the sequences a faint heartbeat, a theremin Lead.
    • A sequence set to level 0 now stays silent when Energy rises.

    Upgrading

Install over 0.9.0 as below; nothing else to do. Your pieces' settings are kept.

The FM-1's CPU: 0.9.0 peaked at 73% in Sunrain, and the moving master filter adds a little. The engine thins its sound briefly above 75%. If you hear Sunrain thin out at the top of a rise, the Setup page's CPU will show it; please tell us.

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.1.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.1.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: 0.9.0 stays available; or the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

  9. v0.9.0NACHTFAHRT 0.9.01 file

NACHTFAHRT by Cranky Man: a generative 1970s Berlin School instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1. Two sequencers drift against each other over a slow drone; a lead voice dreams above them. Let it play for hours, or play with it: the white keys give you the melody, always in the piece's key.

This is the first public build, a test version below 1.0. It has run on a real FM-1 (the Setup page's CPU about 48% now / 65% peak at its heaviest; Sunrain peaks at 73%).

    In 0.9.0

    • Eight pieces after Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Ashra: Timewind, Wahnfried, Phaedra, Rubycon, Stratosfear, Sunrain, Mirage, Cyborg. Each remembers how you left it.
    • Two sequences, Sequence 2 usually a step shorter (8/7, 16/15) so they drift apart and meet again; with Motion, Sequence 2 moves an octave up or down for a section now and then. Their notes are repeated at the echo's times.
    • A Drone (organ, strings, choir, saws, glass) through a slow phaser, its chords walking; a Lead gliding far in the reverb, phrasing in calls and answers; an Atmosphere (wind, surf, space, tape) where a piece wants one.
    • Filter motion: every layer's filter wanders on its own clock, always relative to the Cutoff you set (each layer's Move page: Width, Time, Rate, Intro); a Bridge in the middle where the layers part and meet. A piece never ends.
    • Play: the white keys play the Lead in the piece's scale; the black keys are eleven effects while held (Take-off, Supernova, Twitter, Repeat, Swell, Freeze, Octave, Return, Rise, Close, Transpose), lit, dark while held.
    • Controls: SELECT turns the level of the layer whose page you are on; OCT- / OCT+ its octave (lit while shifted); PERFORM (SEL) mutes and solos the layers and pushes Filter, Wet and Energy; REC held, sixteen more effects.
    • The screen: Cosmic on black; the chord's name among orbiting dots, five meters with their filters' ticks, the two sequences' lanes.

    Installing

    • From the browser (Chrome or Edge, or Chrome on Android with a USB-OTG adapter): open the installer, connect the FM-1 by USB, allow MIDI, press Install. Nothing to install on the computer.
    • From the command line: download nachtfahrt-0.9.0.fwsc below, and from a checkout of this repository run python3 tools/fm1_install.py nachtfahrt-0.9.0.fwsc (needs mido and python-rtmidi).
    • Going back: the installer's "Back to the stock firmware" (M-VAVE's FM-1 V15), or M-VAVE's updater, M-UPGRADE, from m-vave.com/download. If NACHTFAHRT fails to start twice it starts in a safe mode, from which the installer still works.

Installing other firmware is at your own risk.

Try it first in the emulator: the same code, with sound, in the browser. The manual has the rest.
